Top Five Steps to Acting As If

Let’s dive right in.

The ability to act as if you are already where you want to be in your life is the essence of The Act as if Technique.  But most people go no further with this novel approach to achieving goals than simply reminding themselves, “Right, if I want to be successful, I’ve got to act successful.”

That’s not enough.

There are five steps to acting as if if you want to apply this technique to your daily and have it work for you.

STEP ONE: Story

The explanations we give ourselves about why our life is the way it is – “I never pick the right men,” “I always go for girls who treat me like ___,” “I’ll never get to travel to the places I want to go,” “There’s nothing I can do.”  These blanket statements derived from negative self-talk are stories with an outcome that wreaks of a willingness to accept that you are a victim and have no control over your life.  Say it ain’t so!

Change your story, now!

Rewrite it with every affirmation under the sun and say it out loud with gusto daily.  Include a vision of your future that is so real you can taste it. You’ll know you’ve nailed it when you arouse a feeling inside yourself that is similar to one you would feel if you’re a teenage girl and someone said, I just got you front row tickets to see One Direction and I’m going take you backstage to meet the band.  AHHHHH!

STEP TWO: Character

Once you’ve got your story in place, think about your role in it and the positive characteristics you’ll need to walk the talk – capable, brave, cooperative, conscientious, bold, dependable, reliable, adventurous, daring…

Find characters in movies that have qualities you need to cultivate; get a feel for what that looks like in action.

Become a master of steps three and four.

STEP THREE: Voice

How do others perceive you when you speak?  Are you getting the results you want from every encounter you have?  This is the power of your voice. Learn how to use it to support your character and your story.  Voice expert Roger Love is the master on this one.

STEP FOUR: Body Language

It can be a simple shift in posture that will boost your confidence, but their is no denying that the power of body language is extreme.  Actors too, know that they cannot do their job to move an audience emotionally without their body being in sink with their intention.

FACT: People’s gestures are an indication of their real intention.

Check out Amy Cuddy’s TED Talk about how your body language shapes who you are.

STEP FIVE: Breathing

Seriously?  Yes.  When done properly, breathing exercises will improve your concentration helping you to focus and to relax.  In a word, deep breathing unlocks tension.  The Alexander Technique is a breathing method that when practiced can provide you with benefits that are long-lasting.  No kidding.

A WINNING COMBO

Story, character, voice, body and breathing.

Used simultaneously and congruently, you’ve got a winning combo to walk like, talk like, think like, look like, and act like the you who is already living the life you want.  This is a powerful mix sending a mighty message to your subconscious that you are on your way to achieving your goals!!
