Exploring Feldenkrais

Feldenkrais quoteIn my constant pursuit to explore acting techniques that can help us as human beings to reach our full potential and have an awesome experience here on planet earth, stumbling on the Feldenkrais Method was inevitable.

First we must understand that before the Feledenkrais Method was Feldenkrais the person, Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, who began to develop his awareness raising therapy during the 1940s due to his own debilitating knee injury. His journey to heal himself, eventually became a series of calm, exploratory exercises that help others.

WHAT CAN THE FELDENKRAIS METHOD DO FOR YOU?

The benefits of the Feldenkrais Method are surprising. The exercises quietly  and unknowingly shift your attention to the present. While the movements are neither strenuous or exhausting physically, they ask more from your brain than you body, and that’s a bit unsettling, at least it was for me.

MY FIRST CLASS

I’d been wanting to experience Feldenkrais and was lucky enough to have found the perfect instructor. That day, she made herself known by the rattling of glasses on a silver tray that she carried up to her attic home studio. Her name was Chrish and the decorative glasses were for tea we would drink after class. Chrish greeted her regular students by name, noticed me the newcomer, said hello, and then asked us all to stand. The class got underway –

Become aware of your surroundings. How do you feel today? Where in your body are you holding tension? Simply become aware of it that’s all. I was loving this. Exactly what I wanted. Then floor exercises composed of gentle movements, filled the hour. I wondered how these exercises could actually be doing anything, and then mid-way, it clicked. My brain suddenly and quite unexpectedly had become an active congruent participant with the body movments.

At the end of the 60-minute class we were asked once again to stand, become aware of our surroundings and check back in with ourselves, how were we feeling now? More self-aware I would have to say – I felt absolutely present – in my body. Over time the Feldenkrais promise to change habitual patterns of behavior that would allow new ways of thinking and doing to emerge, were enough to make me return to this class often.

FELDENKRAIS BENEFITS

Not only does the Feldenkrais Method teach the brain easier and more pleasing ways of doing things, it can do the following:

  • create new ways for the brain to organise unconscious movement
  • eliminate mental distraction
  • deepen self-awareness
  • improve overall health, posture, coordination, balance, and flexibility
  • enhance fitness and performance
  • increase self-confidence and joy of living

It’s a thumbs up for me and I urge you to give it a try.

The Feldenkrais Method is also worth your time if you’re using The Act As If Technique (a.k.a Roleplay) because it helps you focus on the intention of your OC so that your thoughts and behavior line up with your narrative.

How did Chrish’s class wind up? Did we drink the organic tea in the pretty glasses? Indeed we did! It was very hot and very strong. It was delicious!

The Mask Experiment

If you’ve been struggling playing the part of the best version of you, The Mask Experiment is your way in.

I first learned about mask work from Academy Award winning actor, Kevin Spacey, who uses masks in his Masterclass.  In that class after an actor performed his or her monologue, often times Mr. Spacey would pick up a mask, hand it to the actor and say: “Now put this on…” Every time, the monologue was infinitely better.  Why?  Because with the mask on, the actor let go of any resistance to becoming the character and instead embraced the freedom to transform.

HOW THE MASK EXPERIMENT CAN HELP YOU

Release Tension – Access Confidence: The Spine Roll Exercise

Imagine your spine is like the open road transmitting information easily to your brain.

When the road is free and clear, you feel good; your body operates efficiently.

But when there is bumper-to-bumper traffic and you’re pressed for time, that good feeling can quickly turn into a lot of mental, emotional and even physical discomfort.

All of which = stress.

WHERE DOES STRESS GO?  Continue reading

Self-Discipline: Three Ways to Get it

Self-discipline is a muscle.

When we don’t use it mediocrity sets in.

That can lead to a life of regret.

Yuck.

Don’t worry, because you’re not going to let that happen!

It’s time to move from complacency into the realm of possibility or better yet…  Continue reading

Creating Possibilities: The Power of Asking WHAT IF

Dustin Hoffman.

Tootsie.

Hoffman’s character in this 1982 Academy Award winning film, Michael Dorsey, would go to any lengths to get a part, even if it meant playing a tomato: “Nobody does vegetables like me!”

Most of us if asked to BE a tomato, or a horse or a tree … would ultimately give up (or break down in hysterics) because (aside from feeling ridiculous), we don’t believe we’re any of those things.

But WHAT IF you were asked to behave like one of them? Continue reading

Top Five Steps to Acting As If

Let’s dive right in.

The ability to act as if you are already where you want to be in your life is the essence of The Act as if Technique.  But most people go no further with this novel approach to achieving goals than simply reminding themselves, “Right, if I want to be successful, I’ve got to act successful.”

That’s not enough. Continue reading

How to Harness the Power of Your Given Circumstances

Your life. The past. The present.

That’s given circumstances in a nutshell.  And if we were talking about a story, the given circumstances are much the same – the known facts about a situation or a character.

Take the film Mary Poppins, the given circumstances are: Mary Poppins is an English nanny with magical powers who works for a family called the Banks, she takes care of their two children, Jane and Michael, the trio share incredible adventures. Continue reading

How to Handle Uncomfortable Emotions & Why it’s Good for You

It’s called Uncomfortable Willingness.

Being able to accept living in a state of emotional discomfort.

Ugh. As if any of us would want to do that!

What is that uncomfortable feeling?

It’s resistance + dread. And our ego is always on the lookout for anything that might make us appear ridiculous or put us in a state of discomfort. Take the first day of school butterflies or first day on the job jitters. No thanks! Emotional discomfort is that foreboding feeling of having to call a creditor to discuss a payment plan, or stage fright prior to giving a presentation. In a nutshell, it’s all the things we don’t want to do, but all the things that when we do them, bring us relief. Continue reading
